The Memphis Police Department is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs as an official on-the-job training program site where individuals who have been hired as police recruits and are eligible for educational benefits from the VA, such as the Montgomery G.I. Bill, can use their benefits for the time frame that they attend the Memphis Police Academy as well as the 12-month probationary period that they are on probation after graduation.

A Memphis Police Officer works under the direction of an assigned supervisor to perform a wide range of tasks to promote the public safety and security.

As a police officer you will:

Age:  Applicants must be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program at the Police Training Academy.

Criminal Record: Applicants must not have been convicted of, or pled guilty (or entered a plea of Nolo Contendre) to any felony charges. This also applies to violations of any federal/state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances.

Other Requirements:
-Valid driver's license (Must obtain a TN driver's license if hired.)
-Successful candidate must establish residence in Shelby County within six months of hire date.

Salary is based on 26 pay periods per year.

Other entitlements include:
Overtime Pay, Longevity Pay, College Reimbursement, Shift Pay, Court Pay, Hazard Pay, and Out of Rank Pay.


The Memphis Police Department has five major components in the employment process for police officers.

***PLEASE  NOTE***

Individuals who were disqualified for the position of Police Officer
on the basis of their psychological evaluation for the period of 1996-2001 will be allowed to reactivate their application of employment with the Memphis Police Department.

These individuals will not be required to re-take the written qualifying tests known as WRAP or ABLE but will still be required to pass a physical exam , psychological exam and an updated background check for the period since they were disqualified.

Applicants will participate in a series of tests that will simulate routine physical tasks performed by Memphis Police Officers.

Hearing; Vision (20/125 in each eye corrected to 20/20 with normal color vision and depth perception); Laboratory test to determine drugs or alcohol use; Stress Test.

PST Program
The Police Service Technician (PST) program is designed to prepare an individual to become
a commissioned police officer through education, training, and work experience.

The Police Service Technician Program is not a permanent position and requires satisfactory attainment of department standards in the following components as a condition of continued employment and for eventual appointment to the position of Police Officer.

Those components are:

  • Work Experience

  • Police Basic Training

Basic Training
The John D. Holt Police Training Academy offers recruits a 21-week instructional and physical training program. The fully-equipped Training Academy is spacious, and structured to accommodate classes of all sizes. The facility features a 150 seat auditorium, two 50 seat classrooms, four breakout rooms, gymnasium with weight room, video production lab, satellite link, computer lab, driver training track, 24 lane indoor shooting range, 50 lane outdoor shooting range, and a skeet range. Basic training includes, but is not limited to, classroom instruction in law enforcement policies and procedures, firearms use/handling and intensive physical training.

Assignments
After graduation from the academy, recruits are assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division. Upon completion of recruit probation, officers are eligible to bid for many of the Specialized Units based on employment seniority and job openings.

Application Filing Date: From the time an applicant returns an application to the Employment Unit until the start of an academy class, an applicant should have their application submitted at least three (3) months prior to the start-date of the class. This allows time for Physical Ability Testing (PAT), Written Testing, Background Investigations, Physical-Medical Testing and Two-week notices.
