In January 1994, the Beale Street Substation, which was staffed by officers from the West Precinct, became the Downtown Precinct -  the city's sixth fully operational precinct.

While in square miles and residential population the smallest precinct, the South Main Station swells to several hundred thousand people a day due to a large workforce population, various downtown events held during the year, and the many tourists who visit historic sites such as Beale Street and the Civil Rights museum.

The South Main Station officers cover approximately 5.01 square miles and provide service to over 18,000 permanent residents.

Entertainment District Unit (EDU)
The South Main Station is home to the Entertainment District Unit that was formed in 2003 to address the additional traffic and larger crowds drawn to the newly revitalized downtown area. This special unit receives specialized training courses geared specifically towards entertainment districts – including crowd and traffic control.

Neighborhood Watch
The Neighborhood Watch Coordinator is Ms. O. Perry.
Ms. Perry can be reached at the South Main Station Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm.
